Once you get to Cancun, the most economical way for a family to get to Playa del Carmen and/or the Mayan Riviera (we think) is by hotel shuttle (all-inclusive resorts only).
Cancun International Airport (CUN) is a short 30 minute commute by bus or car to Playa del Carmen.
The most convenient way to get to your hotel is by private van. For reliable and inexpensive airport transfers in a private van, we recommend booking with Ricardo Ruiz, Operations Manager for Caribbean Coast Travel (C.C. Travel). For the Robinson Family Vacation 2007, we booked a private van with Caribbean Coast Travel and we have nothing but great things to say about C.C. Travel. The driver with the private van was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived. He loaded our luggage in the van, and wisked us off to our hotel immediately. No problems and no time waisted either direction.
C.C. Travel also has a "car for hire" service. They offer the service of renting a private car or van with a chauffeur.
