We are the Robinson Family, a family that has experience in vacationing on the Mayan Riviera. You will find our site packed with information, Playa del Carmen pictures, and probably the most important...reviews...from other vacationing families like ours. First hand experience on where to go, where to stay, and what to do on the Mayan Riviera. This site is for you, if you would like Mayan Riviera travel information.
Situated in a tropical rainforest, the Mayan Riviera gives us pristine white soft sand beaches that stretch along a body of water that is so clear and turquoise blue in color, that you won't believe your eyes.
There is lots more to the Mayan Riviera than gorgeous beaches; this area is very rich in history, history of the Maya culture. Their legacy is handed down in stone, which are popular attractions such as Tulum and Chichén Itzá.
The Mayan Riviera is located in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, on the Caribbean Sea. It is a short 30 minute commute by bus or car from the Cancun International Airport. It starts at Cancun and ends at Tulum, with a wonderful quaint village that rests on the water in between Cancun and Tulum, called Playa del Carmen.
The Mayan Riviera is famous for its best all inclusive resorts (meals and more are included) located along highway 307, known as Mayan Resorts. This is probably the biggest reason why the Mayan Riviera is the best all inclusive vacation for families. Other reasons to consider are:
Xel-Ha is an ecological water theme park located 76 miles south of Cancun, Mexico and 8 miles north of Tulum, Mexico. The Mayan people named Xel-Ha, meaning "where the water is born" or "source of the water". Xel for source of spring and Ha for water. Legend says the Mayan gods pooled their wisdom, dreams and love of beauty to create a place where the best of the Caribbean could be gathered. Today, Xel-Ha is a marvelous creation of nature that anyone can enjoy, a collection of coves, lagoons, cenotes and caves where sea water merges with the sweet water of the Yucatan's underground rivers. There are lots of activities for the whole family at Xel-Ha including snorkeling, snuba, kayaking, swimming with dolphins, and bicycling. There are many water, land and adventure activities for many fun filled days at Xel-Ha.
Xcaret is also an ecological water theme park. It is located 45 minutes from Cancun, Mexico and 5 minutes from the village of Playa del Carmen, Mexico. With the idea of tourism development, a group of Mexican entrepreneurs purchased land around Xcaret. However, when they began to clear the land, they started uncovering cenotes formed by collapsed cave ceilings weakened by 3 million years of erosion from underground rivers running through them and flowing into the sea. So they began to formulate the idea of a natural park open to the public. Today, Xcaret is home to many wonderful activities including snorkeling, snuba, swimming with dolphins, extraordinary shows, aquariums, wildlife preserve, and a beach for you to relax on.
Tulum, Mexico is one of my absolute favorite places to visit while my family is on vacation on the Mayan Riviera. It is located 1 hour south of Playa del Carmen, Mexico and 25 minutes south of Akumal. The Mayan ruins of Tulum is a very impressive site. It is perched high on top of limestone cliffs that spill down to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean below. The first time, matter-of-fact every time, I visit Tulum, it's beauty just "takes my breath away"! Accommodations in Tulum range from rustic cabanas to wonderful 5 star jewels on white pristine beaches. Because it is a much slower paced vacation in Tulum, Mexico...Enjoy...Enjoy! Sit back and enjoy the beauty of Tulum, Mexico!
Chichen Itza is definitely the most impressive Mayan ruin on the Yucatan Peninsula. This famous pyramid offers a spectacular view of the jungle, after a challenging climb to the top. Chichen Itza is located 3 hours from Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The ruined city has several hundred building, in which about 30 have been restored.
The numerous all inclusive resorts on the Mayan Riviera is one of the best accommodations for a family on vacation. Most of the all inclusive resorts offer spectacular swimming pools that overlook the caribbean ocean. Meals and more are included in these all inclusive resorts, so for those of us with a family, this means great savings!
Snorkeling and diving in and around Playa del Carmen, Mexico is a very popular activity for the whole family. There are many great places to snorkel and dive, but just to mention the most popular, we have Marina Maroma, which is the site of the world's second largest barrier reef, Akumal (Yal Ku Lagoon), Akumal is a small town located 23 miles south of Playa del Carmen not far from Xel-Ha and Xel-Ha, the beautiful ecological water theme park.
Shopping on 5th Avenida in Playa del Carmen, Mexico is a must do, especially for all Moms! This pedestrian only street is an experience in itself. Fifth Avenida captures true Mexican ambiance. From local street vendors to a variety of restaurants to Mariachi bands, Quinta Avenida will keep you entertained.
Deep sea fishing has been a favorite sport for lots of Dads, Moms too! Fishing in Playa del Carmen is ranked extremely high by serious fisherman from all over the world. Local deep sea fishing has been featured several times on ESPN as well as in a number of fishing magazines. Many of the world's most wanted fish swim in the waters off the coast of Playa del Carmen.
Beaches on the Mayan Riviera are outstanding! Whether you are on Maroma Beach, Mamitas Beach, Shangri-La Beach, Coco Beach, etc., you will find soft, white, pristine sand with wonderful spots to swim and snorkel in beautiful turquoise waters with plenty of Mexican sun to go around.
